The Prado Museum premieres the documentary 'The Spirit of Painting' on the work of Cai Guo-Qiang
Isabel Coixet's documentary, which is sponsored by Samsung The Frame, takes the viewer on the journey of creation of Cai Guo-Qiang's work on display at the Prado Museum.
Isabel Coixet has presented the documentary The spirit of painting in which the filmmaker portrays the process of gestation and creation of the exhibition The spirit of Cai Guo-Qiang's painting in the Prado and turns the viewer into a privileged witness of the dialogue that the artist Cai Guo-Qiang maintains with the great masters of his collection.
Through this fifty-minute documentary, shot in 4K and produced by Miss Wasabi Films for the Prado Museum with the sponsorship of Samsung The Frame and the participation of Movistar+, the viewer will know all the secrets of a work and its creator. You will understand how Cai Guo-Qiang works with images, with the purity of colors or with gunpowder. You will appreciate the details of each painting, the uncontrollable explosions and the beauty conveyed by the moment of completion of a work.
The Spirit of Painting, in its original version subtitled in Spanish, will premiere on January 29 at 10:00 p.m. on Movistar Xtra and will be available on DVD starting in February.
There is also a shorter 20-minute version that is part of the Cai exhibition at the Prado and is projected in room D of the Jerónimos building.
New works at Samsung The Frame
In addition to sponsoring the documentary, Samsung has announced the availability of six of the artist's works, in 4K quality, in the digital gallery of The Frame television. These six works Cai Guo-Qiang en el Prado They join the selection of the permanent collection, Museo del Prado Collection, currently available in the Art Store in The Frame, being the first time that they are available in a 4K format simultaneously with the exhibition of the work.
The six works by Cai Guo-Quiang that The Frame users will be able to display, through the Store, with maximum 4K image quality and a high level of detail are: Black Ceremony, Mountain in Heat, Valley in Heat, Last Carnival, Day and Night in Toledo y Hall of Kingdoms.
Born in the Chinese province of Fujan and current resident of New York, Cai Guo-Quiang is one of the great international contemporary artists, famous for his original explosion technique in his drawings thanks to the properties of gunpowder. At the exhibition The spirit of painting, Cai Guo-Qiang pays his particular tribute to the figure and spirituality of El Greco - reconstructing the personal and artistic journey from Greco's native Crete to Venice, Rome and Toledo - and proposes a dialogue with the Prado masters. The exhibition is made up of 27 paintings made with gunpowder, eight of them made in the Salón de Reinos of the Prado Museum, which was converted into the artist's studio for several weeks.
Samsung – Prado Museum collaboration
As a technological collaborator of the Prado Museum since 2013, Samsung participates in the creation of content and the joint development of applications with which to offer new interactive and multimedia experiences to museum visitors and bring art closer to all audiences.
The latest joint project between Samsung and the Museum has been the inclusion in the digital gallery of The Frame television of a selection of works from the art gallery. Gathered in the Museo del Prado Collection, this selection of works in 4K has been edited to optimize viewing on television and includes masterpieces such as The Garden of Delights of the forest, Las Meninas by Velázquez and works by Goya, Rubens, El Greco or Zurbarán. This collection, available worldwide, can be purchased by subscription or a la carte sale.
