ARRI launches Alexa LF, a 4K version of its popular camera

The new ARRI Alexa LF records native 4K signal with the same colorimetry and dynamic range as its “sisters” but in a format that supports 4K resolution in terms of pixels.

ARRI has announced the launch of a new 4K version of its popular digital cinematography camera Alexa. This launch responds to the demand of producers and directors of photography who wanted to use the Alexa family of cameras in Ultra High Definition productions. Netflix also complying with the technical requirements for streaming in Ultra High Definition.

"The ARRI Alexa and Amira are fantastic cameras, and we get a lot of content captured with these cameras. However, since these cameras do not have true 4k sensors, we cannot accept them for our original 4K productions," they maintain from Netflix.

Now, with this new camera, ARRI aims to break this barrier. The new Alexa LF records native 4K signal with the same colorimetry and dynamic range than its “sisters” but in a format that supports 4K resolution in terms of pixels.

Alexa LF captures 4448 x 3096 images, like previous ARRI camera systems supporting Apple ProRes and ARRIRAW unencrypted, but up to 150fps (50fps slower than the Alexa Mini). Filmmakers can explore a large format aesthetic while retaining the sensor's natural colorimetry, pleasing skin tones, and proven suitability for HDR and WCG workflows, ARRI says.

Accompanying the launch of the Alexa LF camera are presented 16 new lenses ARRI large format cameras, ranging from 12 mm to 280 mm and are equipped with the new ARRI LPL mount. Existing Alexa lenses and accessories are also compatible with the new camera.

Filmmaker Dan Laustsen (The Shape of Water) as well as cinematographers Bill Bennett, Tom Fährmann, Matias Boucard and Wang Yu have already tested the new Alexa LF.
