The sonorous silences of 'Verónica' convince the Academy to award the Goya for the best sound

Aitor Berenguer, Gabriel Gutiérrez and Nicolas de Poulpiquet have risen this Saturday, February 3, with the 2018 Goya Award for Best Sound for his work in the film Veronica, directed by Paco Plaza. The terror of the film has convinced the Academics, displacing the other three candidates: The author, The bar y big.
In Veronica The sound design was carried out by Gabriel Gutiérrez, together with Aitor Berenguer in the production sound and Nicolás de Poulpiquet as co-author of the mixes with Gabriel Gutiérrez himself. According to the director, “sound is 50 percent of the information in a movie, and in the case of a horror film it is even more.”
The team has achieved in the studies Less Sweet DB (nominated three times for the Goya) recreate a dark and disturbing world bordering on the paranormal, masterfully managing subtlety and sound silences.
After collecting the Goya, Gabriel Gutiérrez thanked Paco Plaza and the producer, Enrique Lavigne, for the trust placed in them, as well as the professionals who have worked closely on the project on behalf of Menos Doce DB, as well as those responsible for the artistic processes of Foley and Soundtroop.
Gutiérrez acknowledged to Panorama that “the recording of Veronica It was very complex since Paco Plaza loves to work in a very natural environment, so, especially when working with children, you have to take advantage of rehearsals and of course you work without marked positions, which is quite a challenge.”
“We wanted a pleasant acoustic sensation, never overwhelming, not aggressive, we took great care in dosing the silences,” commented Plaza.
Ad Hoc Studios
On the other hand, Ad Hoc Studios made available to the team Veronica its Madrid facilities for 22 days for sound mixing, which has the peculiarity of having recovered the analog equipment. The film took three Avid Pro Tools 12 HD with 7 HDX cards on the Avid S6 table.
The final result is a horror film that meets the standards of the genre and creates an atmosphere of tension beyond the usual scares.
The plot revolves around a teenager who, after making a Ouija board with some friends, is besieged by dangerous supernatural presences that threaten to harm her entire family. Paco Plaza and Fernando Navarro sign the script for the film starring newcomers Sandra Escacena, Bruna González, Claudia Placer and Iván Chavero, accompanied by Ana Torrent, Sonia Almarcha, Consuelo Trujillo, Maru Valdivielso and Leticia Dolera.
