RED Digital Cinema presents its new Gemini 5K S35 sensor
The new Gemini 5K sensor takes full advantage of dual sensitivity to provide greater flexibility in different lighting environments.
In the prelude to NAB 2018, RED Digital Cinema has made known the new Gemini 5K S35 sensor for the RED Epic-W camera. This sensor takes full advantage of dual sensitivity to provide greater flexibility in different shooting environments.
Whether working in standard mode with adequate lighting conditions or darker scenes, the RED Epic-W sensor with Gemini 5K S35 delivers incredible dynamic range and produces cinematic-quality images.
The Gemini 5K S35 sensor offers a exceptional low light performance, allowing for cleaner images with less noise and better shadow detail. Operators can easily switch between one mode or another via the camera's on-screen menu immediately.
Additionally, it offers a larger field of view at 2K and 4K resolutions compared to the higher resolution Helium sensor. Furthermore, the dimensions of the sensor 30.72mm x 18mm allow for greater coverage with anamorphic lenses than with Helium or RED Dragon sensors.
Jarred Land, president of RED, highlighted that "while the Gemini sensor has been developed for low-light conditions in outer space, we quickly discovered that this sensor could offer much more. In fact, we loved the potential of this sensor so much, that we wanted to develop it to have a broader appeal. As a result, the Epic-W Gemini now has dual sensitivity modes. Although it has a low-light ca performance mode, it also offers a default standard mode that allows you to capture in brighter conditions."
DSMC2
Designed based on DSMC2 compact body, this new camera and sensor combination captures full-frame 5K motion at 96fps along with blazing-fast data rates of up to 275MB/s. Additionally, it supports RED's enhanced IPP2 image processing pipeline in the camera.
Like all RED DSMC2 cameras, Epic-W can simultaneously record REDCODE RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR and is supported by the Obsolescense Obsolete program, an operating principle that allows current RED owners to upgrade their technology as innovations are revealed, allowing them to move between camera systems without having to purchase all new equipment.
