The Cannes Film Festival once again had Christie as a technological partner
For twelve years now, Europe's most glamorous film competition has trusted Christie to guarantee the highest quality in the screenings of its programming and at the Marché du Film.
One more year, and already there are editions, the Cannes International Film Festival has trusted Christie as a projection technology partner. The competition, which is held annually, every May and for two weeks on the French Riviera, can boast of being, after the Oscar Awards, the best-known film festival in the world. For this year's edition, which took place between May 8 and 19, Christie has supplied 29 projectors of its digital cinema projection catalogue, including its already flagship CP4230, a lamp model and 4K.
The 2018 edition of the festival is the 71st in its history; In it, 21 films from all over the world have competed to win the coveted Palme d'Or that the Japanese has finally won Hirokazu Kore-eda con su filme Manbiki kazoku (Shoplifters).
With the transition from celluloid now complete, which has lasted a decade, the jury, led this year by Cate Blanchett, has now been able to view all the films in digital projection. In addition to the competitive section, the festival also hosts the Marché du Film, a meeting point for more than 12,000 professionals and which also has small projection rooms that also benefit from Christie's projection technology.
Jean-Baptiste Hennion, director of cinema technology at 2AVI, explains that "both the maintenance team and myself are always happy to work with Christie projectors, and this year too, as they guarantee extremely high image quality and all kinds of praise from the teams of the participating films. I take this opportunity to thank the Christie team for achieving the impossible: that work is synonymous with pleasure”.
The technical specifications of the festival's projection technology are overseen by the CST (Higher Technical Commission for Image and Sound). Francis Zee, Christie's consultant, comments that "the technicians who make up the CST are the elite of the French film and broadcast sectors, and their task of supervising the technical operations of the Festival is enormous. It is always appreciated that the results are good, and in this the work carried out by the CST, especially in relation to DCP/DCI, has played a fundamental role. Their standards, like ours, are very high, hence the strength of our association, which we hope will continue for many more years.”
This year, Christie has supplied the Cannes Film Festival with 29 projectors, 10 of them for the festival itself and 19 for the Marché du Film. All models belong to the Solaria Series and include: the CP4230 and CP4220 projectors, with 4K capacity, which are used in the main rooms; the CP2230, for spaces where movies are projected in 2K resolution; and CP2215 for the Marché du Film rooms, which are much smaller in size.
