Coinciding with the annual conference SES Industry Days, closed yesterday Thursday in Luxembourg, SES has carried out the pfirst broadcast of a signal in 8K from its satellite network. With a resolution of 7680×4320 pixels at 60 fps and 10-bit color depth, the video was encoded in HEVC and transmitted at a speed of 80 Mbit/s, four times faster than for a 4K signal.

SES AstraNative images came from an 8K camera provided by Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC) and an 8K animation (CGI) developed by Unigine.

Spin Digital was responsible for encoding, decoding and playing the 8K HEVC signal in real time, using a software solution. To follow the experience, SES Astra used the new 8K displays from Sharp.

Thomas Wrede, vice president of New Technologies and Standards at SES, acknowledges that "although 8K remains a challenge with the video codecs available today, and is several years away from its introduction into consumer homes, this demonstration shows that satellites are now capable of carrying 8K signals. It should be noted that this pilot has also served to test the possibilities of deploying a completely IP-based infrastructure in satellite transmission.
