Canon enters the full-frame mirrorless world with the new EOS R system

Developed from the ground up, the new system has been redesigned with valuable input from photographers and filmmakers. The first EOS R camera will feature the innovative RF mount.

More than thirty years after the launch of the era-defining EOS System, Canon launches its new EOS R system with the first camera with the innovative RF mount. Able to focus on situations with a illumination as low as -6 EV, is the perfect tool to achieve professional results in each image.

The new RF mount has been developed based on the advantages of the EF mount and is the result of careful research by Canon engineers, who have designed an impressive optical system with a distance from mount to sensor 20mm and a large diameter of 54 mm, which facilitates greater freedom in lens design. The new 12-pin mount allows for improved communication and higher transmission power between the lens and camera body, as well as improving design options for lenses, providing higher image quality and improved handling.

The EOS R System with RF mount and Dual Pixel CMOS AF features unparalleled excellent optics, the world's fastest autofocus system and faster camera-lens communication.

Featuring innovative technology for both photography and cinema, the EOS R system allows its users to photograph and record video in the lowest light conditions with precise focus, thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Small and discreet, the EOS R System provides flexibility, plus the advantage of silent shooting. It also provides the best video output quality of any EOS System camera apart from the EOS Cine range of cameras, allowing videographers to take their stories to the next level, thanks to the HDMI 4K de 10 bits. The entire system has improved handling and ergonomics, including an electronic viewfinder and extensive customization possibilities, allowing the user to focus on the subject rather than the camera.

System redesign

The EOS R System inherits all the advantages that the system already had, such as the very important compatibility with EF and EF-S lenses and accessories, when using one of three new adapters that have been developed, pushing the boundaries of image capture. Canon today launched four new lenses compatible with the EOS R System: RF 28-70mm f/2L USM, RF 50mm f/1.2L USM, RF 24-105mm f/4L USM and RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM.

Building on the legacy of Canon lenses, these high-performance lenses will push the boundaries of creative photography with cutting-edge optics and advanced image processing for both stills and video. In addition, users who already use EOS full format or APS-C format cameras will be able to enjoy their EF and EF-S lenses on the EOS R System thanks to the adapters, maintaining the same performance as with SLR cameras, as well as EOS accessories and Speedlites.
