'La casa de papel' makes history by becoming the first Spanish series to win an Emmy
The original Atresmedia series wins this prestigious award, in the Best Drama category, at the ceremony held in New York.
The Money Heist has become the first Spanish series to win an International Emmy, one of the most prestigious awards in the world awarded by the United States Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Antena 3's fiction has beaten its rivals in the Best Drama category: Urban myths, from the United Kingdom; One against all, from Brazil; and Inside edge, from India. In the ceremony held this morning in New York, 44 productions from 20 different countries competed in the different categories, with Atresmedia Televisión being the only Spanish group with a presence among the candidates.
The prestigious award has been collected by two of its executive producers and those most responsible for the success of the series around the world: Sonia Martínez, director of Fiction at Atresmedia, and Álex Pina, creator of the series and executive producer of Vancouver Media.
Martínez has acknowledged that "it has been very exciting. The series that competed were very powerful, very different but at the same time they offered something new."
For his part, Álex Pina stated after collecting the award that "this Emmy is a wonderful miracle that also recognizes a different view in fiction; a view that is Latin, that is Ibero-American and Mediterranean in an eminently American genre such as the perfect heist; a perspective in which the characters are as important as the plots."
Javier Bardají, general director of Atresmedia Television, has valued the historic milestone achieved by the company with this series, stating that "this is a recognition that demonstrates Atresmedia's success in its Fiction strategy. The Emmys have awarded a series born in Atresmedia, whose critical and public success in its broadcast on Antena 3 attracted the attention of the main international operators."
Bardají explained the importance of this series for the company that created it: “for Atresmedia, The Money Heist It is the maximum exponent of our fiction strategy: a quality, prestigious series, respectful of the creators, exportable and capable of being maximally profitable.”
The general director of Atresmedia Televisión also wanted to emphasize the importance of awards such as those achieved by Atresmedia series in the company's business model. "Today, prestige is more than a medal, it is profitability. At Atresmedia we understood years ago that the change was beginning and we wanted to get ahead of it. We understood that it was time for Spanish series to leave the living room screen to travel around the world; that it was time to find new formulas to lengthen and extend the economic life of a series. For all this, the prestige that surrounds our series is so important," he stated.
In this sense, Javier Bardají has stressed that "the world is changing. Our sector is changing. Anyone who does not understand that today success can no longer be achieved with the formulas that worked yesterday... is already part of the past."
Last June, The Money Heist marked another milestone by winning the award for best drama series at the Monte Carlo Television Festival.
Become a mass phenomenon in different countries in America, Asia or Europe, The Money Heist has reached the milestone of the most watched non-English speaking series in Netflix history. This record notably demonstrates the resounding success of the Atresmedia series outside of Spain.
