Diagonal TV will dramatize the history of the Spanish Monarchy between 1900 and 2014 in the series 'Palacio Real'
The group's producer Banijay, Diagonal Tv, has trusted the journalist and novelist Sergio Vila-Sanjuán to dramatize the trajectory of four generations of the Borbón family, between 1900 and 2014, in the series 'Palacio Real. Brilliance and tragedy of the Spanish monarchy'.
Throughout 22 chapters, the series will dramatize the biographical and historical circumstances carried out since 1900 by Alfonso XIII, Juan de Borbón y Juan Carlos I, until his abdication to his son Philip VI.
Vila-Sanjuán comments that the series "could be a Greek tragedy or a Shakespearean drama, but it is something that happened in a time much closer to characters with enormous responsibilities, aware of living an exceptional destiny. Human beings with outstanding virtues and important errors, which had consequences for their country."
It is not the first time that Diagonal TV tells the vicissitudes of the Spanish monarchy. "We already did it with Isabella the Catholic and with Charles V with a very good reception from the audience. Going now to the 20th century is, obviously, a challenge because of how close it is to the present moment. I think trusting someone like Sergio Vila-Sanjuán gives us precisely this seal of rigor and seriousness that we would like the series to have." declares Jaume Banacolocha, CEO of Diagonal TV.
The project has been in the development phase for months and the first contacts have already been made to carry out its production. Through four generations of the Borbón family we become familiar with the daily life of the country, its tensions and its modernization over more than a century.
Diagonal TV has established itself within the fiction audiovisual sector with successful productions of very diverse genres, such as Isabel (TVE), The Cathedral of the Sea (Atresmedia, Netflix, TVC), The knot (Atresmedia), The Heirs of the Earth (Netflix, Atresmedia, TVC) or the movie The bookstore by Isabel Coixet (best film, best direction and best adapted script at the Goya 2018).
Sergio Vila San-Juán is a cultural journalist and writer with a long career. He currently directs the Cultura/s supplement of La Vanguardia. As a specialist in literary and editorial topics, he has been awarded the National Prize for Cultural Journalism. In his role as a novelist he has been awarded the Nadal Prize. In 2020 he published the essay Why am I a monarchist?, a brave defense of the institution that reviews four generations of Spanish monarchs, from Alfonso XIII to Felipe VI.
