Own and independent production in Spain reaches a historical maximum
The production companies with the highest number of hours broadcast on general, thematic and first regional channels during 2019 were Globomedia, Mediapro, Molinos de papel, Alba Adriatica-Contubernio, La Fábrica de la Tele, Unicorn and WB Eyeworks.
Throughout 2019, a total of 65,776 hours of own production (27.8% of the total) and 66,241 hours of independent production (28%). As reflected GECA in your report Production on free-to-air television, own and third-party production has been experiencing a gradual increase year after year since 2015.
In 2005, own production accounted for 52,182 hours (27.9% of the total) and independent production accounted for 48,474 hours (25.9%).
GECA highlights in its report that both its own and independent production find their greatest gap among the regional channels. Independent production finds its best ally in regional channels (with 39.2%) and paid themes (35.6%), while general channels represent a window for 25.2% of its production. In-house production is directed 54.4% to regional channels, 23.5% to general channels and 22.1% to DTT themes.
Third-party production gains 7 points among themes on DTT in 2019 thanks mainly to the Divinity, Energy and Real Madrid TV channels.
The production company with the highest number of hours broadcast on general, thematic and first regional channels during 2019 was Globomedia (3,885 hours broadcast, 5.6%). They follow him Mediapro (3,773 hours, 5.4%), paper mills (3,147 hours, 4.5%), Adriatic Alba-Contubernio (3,007 hours, 4.3%), The TV Factory (2,933 hours, 4.2%), Unicorn (2,748 hours, 3.9%), WB Eyeworks (1,560 hours 2.2% hours), Quartz Productions – Banijay (1,523 hours, 2.2%), Secuoya (1,396 hours, 2.0%).
