The Council of Ministers recognizes his invaluable contribution to Spanish culture as a filmmaker and creator.

The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Minister of Education and Vocational Training, María Isabel Celaá Diéguez, and at the initiative of the Minister of Culture and Sports, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, has agreed to grant the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise to the filmmaker and creator José Luis Cuerda Martínez, posthumously.

The Grand Cross is restricted in nature and can only be awarded to 500 people. Spanish or foreign physicists who have contributed to an extraordinary degree to the development of education, science, culture, teaching or research, provided that the exceptional level of their merits is evident.

In the motivation to distinguish the filmmaker with the Grand Cross, it has been noted that his work has been unanimously recognized and respected by citizens. It dawns that it is not little (1988), is a film that today is claimed as one of the great titles in the history of our cinema.

Between television and cinema he made nearly twenty films, created literary works and knew how to discover and promote the talent of others.
