The playwright and film and television series scriptwriter replaces Fermín Cabal, who has held the position on an interim basis since April 15, as stipulated in the statutes.

Antonio Onetti

Antonio Onetti has been appointed president of the General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE), as agreed by the Board of Directors of the entity meeting in an extraordinary session today (21 in favor, 8 abstentions and 6 against). Onetti replaces Fermín Cabal in office, who has held the interim presidency since April 15, as stipulated in the entity's statutes.

Onetti becomes the 44th president of the institution. An entity that, throughout its 120 years of history, has been chaired by composers (such as Ruperto Chapí, Amadeo Vives, Francisco Alonso, Jacinto Guerrero or Moreno Torroba), playwrights (such as Benito Pérez Galdós, Pedro Muñoz Seca, Carlos Arniches, Eduardo Marquina, Juan José Alonso Millán, Ana Diosdado or Santiago Moncada) or filmmakers (such as Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón or José Luis Borau), among others.

Antonio Onetti has announced that his main objective as president is “to restore confidence in the correct functioning of its governing bodies, with absolute professionalism in management, transparency and efficiency, to call elections to the Board of Directors and the new supervisory body as soon as possible, and to overcome the economic consequences caused by the pandemic with the maximum support for the perpetrators and the lowest possible cost for the entity.”

"To achieve this, it is essential to accentuate collaboration with the cultural institutions on which the SGAE depends: Ministry of Culture, the supervisory body of our society, and CISAC. Cooperation, dialogue and scrupulous compliance with all its requirements must mark our immediate roadmap to normalize the life of the entity," concludes Onetti.
