Ibon Cormenzana begins filming 'The Summit'

'The Summit' is a production of Arcadia Motion Pictures, Aixerrota Films, LAZONA Producciones, Dorothy Films AIE in co-production with Noodles Production (France).

Ibon Cormenzana has started filming his fourth film as a director, The top, a story about companionship, courage, the connection with nature and life, the weight of promises and love.

the movie, starring Javier Rey (The summer we lived, Fariña) and Patricia López Arnaiz (The other look), will be filmed for 6 weeks in the Basque Country, Catalonia, Aragon, The Alps and Nepal.

With an original plot by Ibon Cormenzana himself, the script is written by Nerea Castro (Passing lies, serie en desarrollo por el El Deseo y Viacom). Parte del equipo técnico está integrado por Albert Pascual (Alegría Tristeza, Segundo origen) en la dirección de fotografía, David Gallart (Quien a hierro mata, Alegria Tristeza) en el montaje, Fernando Velázquez en la música (Trilogía del Baztán, Un monstruo viene a verme), Zaloa Ziluaga en la dirección de arte (Advantages of traveling by train) y Fabiola Ordoyo en el diseño de sonido (Madre, Alegría Tristeza).

In the film, Mateo (Javier Rey) faces for the first time the most dangerous mountain on the planet, Annapurna, with the challenge of reaching the top and thus fulfilling an ancient promise. On his way up he suffers an accident that leaves him unconscious and seriously injured. Hours later he is rescued by Ione (Patricia López Arnaiz), an experienced mountaineer who is spending the winter in a shelter, alone and away from the world. Despite not understanding the reasons that have brought Mateo there, Ione will try to help him achieve his goal.

Ibon Cormenzana highlights that “The top es un viaje fascinante; no solo físico, hacia la cima de una montaña, sino emocional, hacia la realización personal de los protagonistas. Mi intención con esta película es hacer que el espectador sienta de la misma manera la experiencia vital a la que se enfrenta Mateo, un personaje con un reto muy claro, una persona constante y con valor suficiente para afrontar las adversidades que se le ponen en su camino con el objetivo último de cumplir una importante promesa”.

“A esta épica se añade el personaje de Ione, que a pesar de estar viviendo un momento personal difícil, nos mostrará el coraje, la lealtad y el compañerismo sin límites, valores que existen entre los alpinistas y que son tan necesarios en la sociedad en la que vivimos”, añade.

“La Cima nos mostrará cómo a pesar de sus miedos, los protagonistas asumirán riesgos que les permitirán superarse y evolucionar, para llegar a entender que la vida hay que vivirla intensamente y saborearla a cada instante. Me gustaría generar en el espectador esas mismas ganas de atreverse a cumplir sus metas, sin flaquear y sin perder optimismo para afrontar el camino que elegimos”.

“A Ione y Mateo hay que sumar un tercer protagonista: la naturaleza. Me gustaría transmitir a través de la cámara la simplicidad de la vida a través de la inmensidad de las montañas. Sin separarnos de los protagonistas y con cámara en mano, quiero transmitir el realismo necesario para despertar la emoción en el espectador acercándole a las experiencias propias que viven los alpinistas de verdad”, concluye.

Productor y director

Ibon Cormenzana es conocido principalmente por su faceta de productor, habiendo cosechado grandes éxitos con títulos como snow white, de Pablo Berger, por el que se alzó con el Goya a mejor película; Blackthorn, de Mateo Gil; El árbol de la sangre, de Julio Medem o Madre, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, among others.

However, since his beginnings in the world of cinema he has directed his own projects. His first feature film, Jaizkibel, participates in numerous national and international festivals, winning several awards, and the prestigious international magazine Variety includes him as one of the young directors to take into account. In 2008 he shot his second feature film, Los totenwackers, distributed by Disney in Spain and sold in numerous countries around the world.

The experience acquired after collaborating with prestigious directors in recent years motivates him to undertake his third feature film, Joy, Sadness, starring the two-time Goya winner, Roberto Álamo and Manuela Vellés, which after passing through the Seville Festival, was released in theaters in 2018.
