Mariano García Marty and Ana Rubio use effects to set a period film with a magical background and an aura of mystery.

Goyas 2021 special effects nominees

Five Goyas have achieved Akelarre of its 9 nominations by winning the Best makeup and hair, couple Beatushka Wojtowicz and Ricardo Molina; Best costume design, for Nerea Torrijos; Best artistic direction for Mikel Serrano; Best Original Music, composed by Aranzazu Calleja and Maite Arroitajauregi; water Best Special Effects, for Mariano García Marty y Ana Rubio.

Akelarre, Goya Best Special EffectsThe prize in this last category was disputed by Raúl Romanillos and Jean-Louis Billard, for Black Beach; Raúl Romanillos and Míriam Piquer for unfortunate stories; and Lluis Rivera Jove and Helmuth Barnert, for secret origins. The thanks of the winners in this case went to Drama FX, the producers and the team Twin Pines.

This edition of the Goya has been a complete success for this production supported by the EITB and which its own director defines as a transgressive film in its form and content, a film that takes risks without expectations, but which has been nominated for nine Goya awards.

Agüero's film takes place in 1609. The Inquisition continues to operate and the King orders the region to be purified, accusing some young women of witchcraft. In order for them to confess everything they know about the coven, they end up creating a magical ceremony in which they intend to invoke the Devil.

Akelarre It has a heterodox approach and a feminist perspective, from which it reflects on how the figure of the witch is manufactured from the point of view of the townspeople. It was filmed in Navarra and the Basque Country with production by Lamia y Kowalski Films.

Magic and mystery

As far as the special effects are concerned, these are basic in a period film with a magical background and an aura of mystery, where witchcraft is the central theme and in which many of the scenes are shot handheld without a tripod because the desire was to escape clichés and opt for freshness and naturalness, creating evocative and beautiful images.

Both Ana Rubio and Mariano García Marty have experience creating special effects, the latter as an FX supervisor at Drama FX. Within the filmography in which Ana Rubio, from the Twin Pines production department, has participated, there are titles such as Twin murders, Coven o The silence of the White city.
