MECAS announces the 19 finalist projects of the 'Almost Done and Unmade Cinema Market'

9 have been the finalists for Cinema Almost Done and another 10 have been selected for Cinema To Be Made. The fourth edition of the market will be held from April 10 to 13 at the Elder Museum and online.

The fourth edition of Almost Done Cinema Market and Unmade Cinema (MECAS) of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, which will take place during the days April 10, 11, 12 and 13 at the Elder Museum in Las Palmas and online, it has announced the finalist projects for its two international markets. In this fourth special edition, the market has shown its commitment to the projects presented in the last edition and has also given the opportunity to receive new participations.

9 projects have been the finalists of Cinema Almost Done, the market for films in the editing or post-production phase that will be eligible for a prize of 8,000 euros and 10 in Cinema to Be Made, a novelty in this fourth edition, aimed at filmmakers with projects in the development phase that will be eligible for a prize of 5,000 euros.

Los projects presented came from 41 countries different and finally there will be representation in most of Spain as well as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, France, Georgia, Mexico, Portugal and the Dominican Republic

MECAS, held within the framework of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, has as its main objective the national and international promotion of filmmakers, production companies and service companies from the Canary Islands, as well as the internationalization of their projects and professionals. MECAS also seeks to become a reference market at the European and Latin American level for independent production companies and filmmakers.

Among the projects selected by Cine Casi Hecho are: Album for youth (Eskimo cinema), The nearby ones (Álvarez – Díaz) and above the clouds (Trivial) with Argentine production, Carajita (Wooden Boat Productions, Pucará Cine) co-produced by the Dominican Republic and Argentina, Courage (Apapacho Films, Mago Production, Cinema226) co-produced between Spain and Mexico, Gods of Mexico (Fulgura Frango) from Mexico, The bad family (Blur Films, BRBR) of Spanish production, silent witnesses (Invasion Cinema) co-production Colombia/France and Notes for a movie (Ignacio Agüero & Asociado, Fulgurance) con producción francesa y chilena.

As for the finalists of the Cinema to Make: for Spain, Anekumen (Coop Tractor, Pyrenees), This is how the night came (Amateur films), Balearic (Apellaniz & De Sosa), The future has not changed us (New Folder, El Viaje Films), The map to touch you (Lunatica Productions) and Krakatoa (Map Productions, Filmika Galaika) also co-produced by France. From Argentina: The heavy school (A puma) and Jealous white men (Fruit Cinema), Grey skies (Parachute Films) by Georgia y The (Terratreme Filmes) co-produced by Portugal, France and Brazil.

In this special edition of MECAS, some of the participants will attend in person, as long as the health situation allows it, and others will connect to the different market activities online.

Activities program

MECAS also advances its program of activities, which will be held in parallel with the viewings, pitches and one-to-one meetings of the selected projects, among which stands out the master class on creative production taught online by María del Puy Alvarado, nominated for the 2021 Oscar Award in the category of Best Documentary Film for Agente Topo (Maite Alberdi, Chile, 2020) or the meeting with Isaki Lacuesta director of Entre Dos Aguas (2018) or The Next Skin (2016) with her usual co-director Isa Campo, in addition to the already announced Taller Primer Corte with the editor Emma Tusell. Registration for these activities will be both in person and online and will open in the coming days.
