EITB - Young people consuming audiovisual content

The areas of audiovisual consumption of youth in the Basque Country and Navarra have been revealed thanks to the latest study by the Ikusiker Audiovisual Observatory.

The research project, part of the program Apply + that drive UPV/EHU, EITB, Tobacco and the Basque Observatory of Culture, deepens knowledge about audiovisual habits and formats among young people. For its latest report, it has had a panel made up of almost 3,000 students between 11 and 23 years old.

The results indicate that, among university students, 70.9% acknowledge that they watch the news on traditional television. On the other hand, the majority (62.6%) use streaming platforms for fiction and YouTube to consume entertainment content (43.3%). As for high school students, 45% use their mobile phone to consume audiovisual content and 24% use YouTube for this.

EITB - University consumption habits - Social networks

Instagram, leading social network

The most used social network is Instagram (92.2% have an account). They use this social network above all for social relationships and to see what others are doing. Regarding the content they upload to Instagram, in most cases they upload content that they have in the gallery, where the central element is the same person who uploads it.

In the case of Twitter (64,5%) y TikTok (40.1%) the attitude is different. On these social networks they upload content that they create at the moment and it usually tends to be “funny” things. It should be noted that the language used on all networks is Spanish.

In the case of high school students, we see that the majority (90%) have an Instagram account and use it, above all, for “social relations” and “passing time.” Their favorite tool is stories, and they believe that on Instagram “there is a lot of posturing” (47%) and that, since the pandemic, they use it more (36%).
