Eleven years after the closure of its Spanish version, CNN Portugal has begun to broadcast this November 22 through television, digital and social platforms, in what is already the largest news release in the Portuguese country in many years.

Last night, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Lisbon hosted the launch of the new channel that will feature prominent Portuguese journalists on its teams who will offer the public high-quality journalism and the latest national and international news and analysis. It will be available in 4.3 million Portuguese homes through pay television, as well as in digital format on CNNPortugal.pt and on all major social media platforms.

CNN Portugal operates through an agreement between Average Capital and CNN International Commercial (CNNIC), which includes access to content and programming from the entire CNN portfolio. Prior to launch, CNN has worked closely with CNN Portugal to prepare the infrastructure and provide training and advice in areas such as content production and newsroom standards and practices.CNN Portugal

Rani Raad, president of CNN Worldwide Commercial, noted that “in a world increasingly awash in half-truths and misinformation, CNN has always strived to deliver quality journalism based on fast and accurate information. We tell the stories that affect us all, from wherever they come in the world, and we tell those stories without fear or favoritism. That's why when CNN reports, it really matters. At Media Capital we have a partner who shares these values. With this partnership, we look forward to increasing our presence in one of Europe's fastest growing markets, as well as expanding further into a language spoken by more than 250 million people worldwide."

Mario Ferreira, president of Media Capital, stressed that “the launch of CNN Portugal puts our country on the path to the best journalism in the world. We do it now because we believe that it is also our role, as representatives of the private sector, to contribute to strong, free, independent, rigorous and demanding social communication. The arrival of CNN Portugal also demonstrates the importance of the Portuguese media in the world and, we are sure, will contribute to increasing the diversity of perspectives and, therefore, to broadening the democratization of information. With this association, the Media Capital Group accelerates and transforms the journalistic universe in the Portuguese language”.
