‘El olvido’ and ‘Lumen’, best projects of Next Lab 2022

The feature film oblivion by Argentina's Claudia Ruiz and the short film Lumen by the Spanish Enric Sant are the winning projects of the second edition of Next Lab, workshop dedicated to the animation sector.

The record is completed Journey to the Forgotten Forest, a feature film Noelia Maria Muiño, and the series Onion & Foot of Jose Manuel Villena next to David Tomaselli, the two special mentions for Spanish projects awarded in 2022. Four proposals in total that thus achieve direct access to their international presentation at the Annecy Festival (France) thanks to the support of ICAA, Institute of Cinematography of Audiovisual Arts, and where the organization of the French event will grant them free accreditation. This specialized workshop that delves into the use of new disruptive technologies to improve production processes, thus completes seven weeks of online and in-person work where 11 of the 20 selected projects entered the final phase held at the Talent Garden Madrid.

The jury, made up of top-level professionals such as Arnaud Miquel, Carmen Córdoba, Manuel González, Nick Ladd y Ursula Garcia, has highlighted the quality of the awarded works as oblivion, a harsh story set in the 1950s, marked by a kidnapping and an episode of abuse that comes to light. The participant in this project has been the animation director Ana Ines Flores, an Argentine animator who has extensive international training and work for such notable clients as Cartoon Network, Adidas and TicTac; Currently, the animator works at the Digital Sun video game studio.

For its part, Lumen It is a short film Henry Sant sobre un pequeño ser luminoso que decide salir de su territorio conocido para investigar más allá. Sant, su creador, proviene del arte urbano y el graffiti. Con más de 10 años de experiencia en la industria digital, Sant se dedica a la dirección de arte y el diseño de producción en animación.

Mejores proyectos españoles

La novedad de esta edición de 2022 son dos menciones especiales destinadas a proyectos españoles que han ido a parar al largometraje Journey to the Forgotten Forest of Noelia María Muiño González and the series Onion & Foot of David Tomaselli y Jose M. Villena. La obra de Muiño González viaja hasta la Galicia rural de los años 90 donde Paula, la niña protagonista, redescubre la relación con su hermano Pablo, con síndrome de Down, a través de un mundo fantástico. Onion & Pea, por otro lado, es la historia de Leo, un niño de 10 años con una vida casi normal a excepción de que convive con una cebolla y un guisante disfrazados de superhéroes.

La programación de Next Lab Madrid ha contado con invitados de renombre internacional como Dan Franke, director y animador cofundador del estudio de animación virtual Studio Syro; el artista y animador VR canadiense Nick Ladd, miembro fundador de la comunidad de Virtual Animation; Marcos Fajardo, creador del software Arnold y Premio Oscar y Emmy de Ingeniería; o Luis Armengol, Technology Director y fundador de KOYI Talent.
