Squirrel Media acquires OTT CanalDeporte

The communication technology group chaired by Pablo Pereiro Lage, Squirrel Media, acquires 64% of the OTT CanalDeporte, the first interactive Spanish digital television dedicated exclusively to the world of sports.

Squirrel Media afirma que esta adquisición está encuadrada dentro de su estrategia para consolidarse como una de las compañías referentes en la generación y distribución de contenidos a nivel global, focalizándose en países de lengua hispana, portuguesa e italiana. Esta operación le permitirá posicionarse, además, como player activo en el segmento de deportes, donde ya cuenta con canales y productoras de televisión como Nautical Channel, Horse TV o Tactic Audiovisual, entre otros.

Squirrel Media has indicated that CanalDeporte is acquired with the permanence of the management team and that the purchase has been financed entirely with the company's own funds, however, due to the fact that it is currently in negotiations with third parties for the integration of other companies with "similar characteristics" and that consequently, to avoid interference in these negotiations, the company has decided not to provide (at this time) the amount of the transaction, as notified in a statement sent to the National Market Commission. Securities (CNMV).

CanalDeporte has free-to-air, subscription and PPV programming, through an online platform or streaming video-on-demand service for all audiences, with live broadcasts and summaries of sports competitions, e-sports, sports training classrooms, as well as documentaries.

It also offers the opportunity for clubs, federations, sports event organizers and producers to exhibit and monetize their sports content and broadcasts.

One of the platform's great concerns is access to sport and the promotion of entities and athletes, which is why almost all of its programming is open and free. Women's sports and grassroots sports are other of its big bets, as well as the broadcasting of minority sports content.
