AES Europe 2023 reinforces its agenda to celebrate the association's 75th anniversary in style
The Aalto University of Helsinki (Finland) will host a new meeting from May 13 to 15 AES Europe promoted by AES, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2023.
He Technical Program of the 154th International Convention of the AES will cover a series of topics related to strictly topical audio, such as immersive sound, the technology and the use of microphones, the recording, the binaural listening and the audio measurement. It will do so with the help of renowned experts such as the recently confirmed Jamie Angus-Whiteoak, AES Fellow and Silver Medalist, Emeritus Professor of Audio Technology at the University of Salford, who will deliver the Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture “The Ear is Not a Fourier Transformer.”
In his speech, Angus-Whiteoak will examine the functioning of the ear, including its non-linear dynamic behavior, while exploring the differences between the Fourier transform and the human auditory system, highlighting how they differently compensate for temporal and frequency resolution. Additionally, the conference will examine the unique ways in which the human auditory system allows us to hear the incredible complexity of an audio signal and how this could affect what we do in the future to improve audio.
Jamie joins the Convention's lineup of special guest speakers alongside 2023 keynote speaker, Douglas Castro, CEO and founder of Helsinki-based Neural DSP Technologies, and award-winning developer of next-generation AI-based digital effects and associated hardware to emulate physical guitar and bass amplifiers.
Parallel activities
Taking advantage of the possibilities of Helsinki, the AES Europe 2023 organization has confirmed that it will promote a free workshop prior to the convention that will take place on May 12 at the Aalto Acoustics Laboratory, where Ville Pulkki, Vesa Välimäki, Tapio Lokki and Sebastian Schlecht will discuss trends in acoustic research, followed by demonstrations in the Laboratory. Likewise, on Saturday, May 13, those registered for the Convention will be able to join friends and colleagues in a night cruise to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Helsinki archipelago.
In addition to preferential registration rates, AES student members have opportunities at the Convention designed specifically for them. Student activities will include the ever-popular student party on May 14 and, within the Technical Program, the clarifying Mixed Student Reviews, in which a panel of industry professionals offer comments, suggestions and opinions on student productions in a live, non-competitive environment,
