The format ‘La penultima y me voy’ by Atresmedia, shot with Blackmagic
Proamagna used solutions Blackmagic to film the documentary series 'La penúltima y me voy', dedicated to the footballer Joaquín Sánchez of Real Betis and broadcast on Atresplayer (Atresmedia).
Tomas Duran, director of the format, sought an approach to The penultimate one and I'm leaving in which the realism and naturalism typical of the documentary style, but with small elements of drama in order to provide an “elegant and unique” tone, as recalled Ivan Puente, technical coordinator of Proamagna. This approach, as well as the lighting challenges, pushed the production company to opt for Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro of Blackmagic.
Puente elaborates on the decision: "In general, there was not much time to plan or put together complex lighting systems, which typically means having to rely only on natural light. Due to the constant changes in location and lighting, the combination of colorimetry and dynamic range of the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro model make it the ideal choice for this project, as it always captures sharp and bright tones, even in high contrast situations."
Juanma Martin, director of photography and cameraman on the project, aimed to exploit the camera's capabilities. Among its preferred functions is the dual native ISO value of Blackmagic's solution: “We mostly worked at ISO 400 outdoors and 1250 on set, while applying DaVinci Resolve Studio's grain corrector in post-production, resulting in a visually pleasing cinematic image.” Martín also highlights the “mix of portability and versatility” of the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, which helped adapt to the moments before Joaquín's last meeting.
The post-production of The penultimate one and I'm leaving
For post-production, the Proamagna team used a NAS server connected to four editing stations that had DaVinci Resolve Studio connected to the network through a 10G Ethernet port. In Puente's words: “We copied everything and then imported the media files into a DaVinci Resolve project, organized and ordered the clips, and then used an SQL database to help record everything before multi-camera editing and color grading.”
The Proamagna team is satisfied with this Blackmagic workflow, which has spanned from the capture to post-production: "This was our first experience in audiovisual post-production carried out entirely in Davinci Resolve, and it surprised us. It proved to be extremely stable at all times, despite intense and demanding multi-camera editing. And the fact that we were able to reproduce the originals from the camera in real time saved us a lot of time."
