Dolby Atmos is consolidated in Sonobox studios with Genelec solutions
The Madrid studio Sonobox has updated its studio 2 with a monitoring system Genelec that will be used for multichannel mixing and the format Dolby Atmos.
Sonobox was born in 1995, becoming from its beginnings one of the first studios in Madrid governed and inspired by and for musicians and producers. The first contact with Genelec solutions Manuel Colmenero, co-founder and manager of the studio, dates back to that same year. At that time, I worked with monitors Genelec S30C combined with some Yamaha NS-10: “For many years that has been for me the combo killer listening and monitoring. I have wonderful memories of the S30C. They provided a “sweet” sound thanks to their ribbon tweeter. “They performed a fundamental role in the first Sonobox installations.”
Currently, Sonobox has two studios. While the 1 is intended for the production and mixing in stereo, he study 2 is used for multichannel mixing and the Atmos format. Far from being independent islands, many projects that pass through the hands of the Madrid company end up being worked on in both spaces: "There is a very productive interaction between the two studios. Many productions are created at a creative level in Studio 2, recorded and mixed and mastered in stereo in Studio 1, and then return to Studio 2 and finish the mix in Atmos."

Genelec Studio 1 is currently equipped with active monitors SAM 1238A 3-way, 15”, while in the new studio 2 they have been installed 8 SAM 8320A monitors, 3 SAM 8340A monitors and a subwoofer SAM 7360A.
The monitor 8320A, a compact 2-way SAM active unit, incorporates a 4” bass transducer and a ¾” treble transducer with metal dome and DCW. It incorporates amplification of 50 W in bass and 50 W in treble. The SAM active monitor 8340A 2-way, it has a 6.5” bass transducer and a ¾” treble transducer with metal dome and DCW. It offers amplification of 150 W in bass and 150 W in treble. For its part, the self-amplified subwoofer SAM 7360A It features a 10" speaker housed in a patented Laminar Spiral Enclosure (LSE), which provides more output with precise bass articulation and very low distortion. It is equipped with a Class D amplifier designed and manufactured by Genelec, which provides high SPL, high reliability and very low distortion.
About these Monitores Genelec, Colmenero highlights "the translation and musicality that any of their models have. In my opinion, there is a false belief about Genelec, and that is that "you don't make an effort to refine the sound because everything sounds good from the beginning." Like any monitor, it requires a learning curve and, once acquired, you also learn to discern what sounds bad from what sounds good, and what areas or focuses you should focus on to improve." The sound engineer, “very satisfied” for the performance of the Genelecs, he also has very high regard for the software GLM of the brand: "It's wonderful. It makes things a lot easier. Firstly, because of the acoustic adjustment it makes of your room. In the case of Sonobox, the rooms have impressive acoustic control thanks to the work of Philip Newell, but I understand that, in other less controlled environments, GLM is a crucial help. Secondly, the possibility it offers to, in a matter of seconds, jump from the Atmos system to 2.1, 5.1 etc., and have an "adjustable" calibration. hoc” for each of them depending also on the listening position in the room.”
