Filmlight - Baselight 6 - IBC 2023

IBC 2023 will allow the industry to discover Baselight version 6.0 (Filmlight), whose beta phase has convinced testers top level.

Baselight 6.0 contributes to the colorists multiple new features and tool updates. Among the innovative new tools are an improved and modernized timeline, a new primary grading tool, X Grade, and a new and exclusive look development tool, Chromogen. Martin Tlascal, lead developer of FilmLight, says he is “proud” to have built this version around “continuous feedback” with the system’s users.”

Filmlight - Baselight 6 - IBC 2023 - X GradeAmong the new functions created by Filmlight stands out X Grade, a primary color correction tool that allows colorists to make multiple, complex, localized corrections in a single layer, without having to create a key or matte. The system works with images smoothly and forgivingly and, unlike other tools on the market, ensures that corrections do not cause creases in the color space, meaning they can be safely copied to shots with a completely different color palette.

Peter Doyle, supervising colorist Postworks NY who has participated in the beta program, does not hesitate to affirm that X Grade has “refined” its color selective work process, while improving its productivity. Sebastian Guest, a freelance colorist, shares his vision and considers X Grade a “nice, easy-to-use, and incredibly intuitive and organic” tool.

Filmlight - Baselight 6 - IBC 2023 - ChromogenChromogen, clave para Baselight 6.0

Chromogen, FilmLight's new look development tool, has been developed to give colorists more creative freedom when producing looks for shows with their director of photography and director. With this solution, which can be discovered in depth at IBC 2023, colorists can imitate classic film looks and easily adapt and modify them to create totally distinctive images.

Jack Jones, colorist and technology director of Roundtable Post, recently used Chromogen to create a new LUT for an upcoming Netflix documentary: "I ended up building the look completely from scratch based on the 70s aesthetic. I created it using 31 different layers in Chromogen. One of the main advantages is that it's almost impossible to "break" the footage with the tool, and you can manipulate the look in each scene if necessary. “It’s the equivalent of being able to adjust and correct parts of a LUT.”

Also with Baselight 6.0, colorists can find a timeline completely redesigned. While retaining a familiar look, Filmlight's redesigned timeline now features a much cleaner and more modern user interface. It also integrates a number of new features, such as support for hints and a new “rendering tree overlay” to give a clearer view of the underlying node tree it represents, in addition to many other things. According to Paul Harrison, colorist and co-founder of the British company Residence Pictures, this improvement is “great” as it allows you to “collapse large stacks of timelines” as well as “lock gradations to make small adjustments (trim passes)”.
