The story of Carme Elías in 'While you are', Best Documentary Film at the Goya 2024
Claudia Pinto's work in telling the story of her friend and actress Carme Elías, diagnosed with Alzheimer's, has captivated the members of the Film Academy, who have recognized 'While it's you, the here and now of Carme Elías' with the Goya 2024 for Best Documentary Film.
As long as it's you of Sin Rodeos Films y Nakamura Films It began as a “secret and pretentious” film, a dedication of love and friendship from Pinto to his friend Carme Elías. The final result, a hymn to love, friendship, vocation and the miracle of art, has led the documentary film to reach the maximum recognition of Spanish cinema thus closing a path begun with a world premiere in the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
For the Venezuelan director, the process of this film has been "quite a journey" marked by "tragedy", but also by "the fortune of being able to make films" and of seeing "Carme be in front of a camera and show herself candidly to the public, this time without the masks of fiction." "I think there are many people who would like to have made a film like this for their father or mother. We have been able to make it and we are delighted that it is happening, because this way the film will reach many more people," Pinto remarked.
Agnès Piqué Corbera served as director of photography for the winner Best Documentary Film to the Goya 2024. In combination with Pinto, they worked to find the balance to pursue the so desired “intimacy”: “The most important thing was to turn the camera into something very transparent so we could forget about being filmed by Agnès.” It has not been an easy task given the path from the director: "For Carmen it was easier, but I was always inevitably more attentive to the frame. In this case, Agnès has had a lot of freedom: she has done it with a lot of intuition and, although sometimes we agreed to go with a 40, a 50 or a 21, really everything has revolved around knowing how to observe, knowing how to be and knowing how to wait. That's what I take away from this film at a directing level."
