Fujifilm - 3 Billion - Afilm - Juan Antonio Fernández

Director of photography Juan Antonio Fernández has chosen several Fujifilm solutions for key underwater and desert scenes in '3 Billion', a science-fiction thriller directed by Yolanda Torres and produced by Afilm.

Anamorphic optics Scorpiolens, the zoom cabrio Fujinon 20-120mm, the underwater camera Fujifilm XT3 with a zoom Fujinon 18-55mm and the projector Fujinon FP-Z8000 to rear-project images inside a submarine or a spaceship are the Fujifilm products chosen by the director of photography Juan Antonio Fernández AEC for the filming of the movie 3 Billion.

Fujifilm - 3 Billion - Afilm - Juan Antonio FernándezThe feature film, a science-fiction thriller produced by Afilm and directed by Yolanda Torres, is a modern version of the myth of Prometheus which revolves around a genetic engineer embarking on an adventure through the desert, the ocean and space in search of an organism with a mutant gene capable of prolonging human life. The main particularities that Fernández faced in this project were recording scenes underwater and in the desert, Challenges you faced with Fujifilm solutions: "I chose to use the Fujinon Cabrio 20-120mm zoom because it cuts very well with the Scorpiolens anamorphic lenses, a combination that I have used before, and because in complicated exteriors like the desert it is very practical to have that focal range. Also because of the speed of working with it, being able to change from crane, to steadicam, or to a shoulder camera without wasting time. With the range of 20-120 in S35mm I cover all the needs of a set of fixed optics,” explains the director of photography.

Regarding the choice of the XT, which he used in video mode 4K, and the lens Fujinon 18-55mm To record the underwater scenes, Fernández argues that he did it “because of the flexibility, ergonomics and image quality that such compact equipment provides in non-optimal underwater conditions.” Fernández also expands on his bet on the Fujinon FP-Z8000 projector, which he used to rear-project images onto screens on the sets given “its optical quality” and because “it is the only one that allowed me to work just 40 centimeters from the screen and gave me a width of almost 2 meters, covering without loss of lighting in the corners.”

It is planned that 3 Billion, currently in post-production, will be released in theaters in the coming months.
