3Cat chooses Fujifilm Duvo optics to shoot the musical 'Mar i Cel' with a “cinema look”
'Mar i Cel', one of the most iconic musicals of Catalan theatre, has been recorded for posterity by the team of 3Cat (TV3) using Duvo optics Fujifilm, which provide a cinematic aesthetic.
The new audiovisual production of Mar and Cel, supervised under the photography direction of Domenec Gibert, has redefined the way of visually narrating in theater, exploring an approach closer to cinema. This is how you define the experience Paulí Subirà, Image Director of 3Cat: "I did not want to re-record this work the Italian way, that is, from the fixed point of view of the spectator in the audience. I sought to give a twist to the narrative language, integrating camera operators into the scene, experiencing it as another character. This, together with the use of a very short range of depth of field, allowed us to minimize the feeling of recording a theater and get closer to a cinematographic aesthetic."
To capture the essence of Mar and Cel, the Catalan public radio and television team combined the optics Fujifilm Duvo with large sensor cameras, including models Venice 2, Burano FX9 and FX6 of Sony. This choice allowed us to record scenes with a high dynamic range and a visual richness that has reflected everything from the intensity of the close-ups to the depth of the most complex scenes. Within the Duvo, we have opted for the 24-300 model, a broadcast-style zoom with a compact and lightweight design that has provided mobility and flexibility to the staging.
Look cinema and the advantages of remote operation
Remote operations have been a key component in the production of Mar and Cel. The cameras were controlled remotely by servos, which allowed precise control of focus and apertures, managing everything through CPR from the mobile unit. This configuration provided technical precision and operational flexibility. Additionally, the monitor system Sony and SmallHD in S-Log3 guaranteed detailed supervision during a recording in which the HDR 4K.50p format was used, ensuring image quality that highlighted the greatness of the work in its most advanced format.
Santiago Sanz, responsible for Optical Devices of Fujifilm Spain, concludes: "Thanks to the collaboration of 3Cat, Fujifilm continues to commit to working with shows and the audiovisual sector in all its disciplines. This project is a clear example of how our technology can elevate performing art to an immersive cinematographic experience."
