Remo Vogel succeeds Peter MacAvock as head of the DVB Project

He DVB project, an international industry-led consortium that designs open technical specifications for digital media distribution, begins a new phase under the leadership of Remo Vogel (ARD), who replaces Peter MacAvock who had been leading the project since 2016.

Remo Vogel, responsible for the strategic development of distribution technology Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg (rbb), has extensive experience in the implementation and improvement of technology DVB. Inside the rbb, broadcaster part of the German ARD, Vogel directs the award-winning pilot DVB-I, standard for internet-centric discovery of television services, and co-chairs both the TV platforms of the UER, such as the DVB-I working group of the Deutsche TV-Plattform.

Remo Vogel joined the rbb in 2008 with the aim of manage web and metadata projects. He played a key role in the expansion of ARD media library to a system multi-tenant in collaboration with SWR, a crucial step towards becoming the largest media library in Germany. He also initiated and managed the deployment of a modern OTT production and distribution infrastructure for live and VOD services on rbb. On the other hand, Vogel's experience in hybrid technologies broadcasting and broadband for television and radio continued to increase thanks to its participation in EU research projects. Since 2020, it has been part of the newly created ARD Competence Center to HbbTV y Platforms, which took charge of standardization activities DVB y HbbTV of the missing IRT.

“Creo firmemente en el valor continuado del trabajo de DVB. Con todo el bombo y platillo en torno a las plataformas de streaming, las realidades extendidas y los contenidos generados por IA, a veces olvidamos que, a la gente, en términos generales, simplemente le encanta la televisión. El objetivo del DVB es hacer llegar el vídeo en directo a los espectadores, ya sea a través de la radiodifusión o de las redes de banda ancha. La tecnología seguirá evolucionando, pero lo que no cambia es el hecho de que tanto los consumidores como la industria se benefician de los mercados horizontales basados en normas abiertas”, ha declarado Vogel en sus primeras palabras como responsable de DVB.

El presidente saliente de DVB, Peter MacAvock, considera que la experiencia de la ARD en el mundo DVB, y por tanto el conocimiento de Vogel, augura un futuro prometedor para la iniciativa: “Alrededor del 95% de los contenidos lineales de ARD se emiten a través de redes DVB. El nuevo papel central de Remo en el proyecto DVB es una importante declaración a la industria. Aportará una innovación muy necesaria cuando la organización entre en una nueva fase”. Por otro lado, Emily Dubs, jefa de tecnología de DVB, ha afirmado tras el nombramiento: “Estoy deseando trabajar estrechamente con Remo en los próximos años. Estoy segura de que guiará a la DVB en el perfeccionamiento de su alcance para que podamos ayudar mejor a nuestros miembros y a la industria en general a lograr sus objetivos empresariales”.
