Javi Frutos puts the finishing touch to his award-winning work in 'Second Prize' with the Best Editing at the Goya 2025
After triumphing at the Malaga Festival and the Carmen Awards for Andalusian cinema, Javi Frutos has won his first Goya Award for his work in 'Segundo Premio', a production of The Terrace Films, Áralan Films, Ikiru Films, Bteam Prods, Sideral Cinema, Los Ilusos Films, Toxicosmos AIE and Capricci Films that conveys the story of the Granada band Los Planetas from a fragmented and, at times, dreamlike perspective.
An excited Frutos has taken to the stage of the Granada Conference Center to collect an award that represents the culmination of a complex production that, as he admits, made him doubt whether the project would finally come to fruition. “The biggest challenge was finishing it,” the editor himself admits, which made him have a “love/hate relationship” with the material.
Mounted with Avid Media Composer in the post-production room of La Terraza itself, Second Prize proposes an immersive journey full of speeches and atmospheres transferred from the sound to the visual realm. At the same time, the very nature of the film, with a complex and fragmented script, has made the project especially challenging, to the point that it has been necessary to carry out multiple previous screenings to capture the opinions of viewers.
With his horizon set on a new series with Diego San José and a film with Alberto Gastesi, Frutos looks to the optimistic future, navigating between cinema, series and documentaries. The industry is changing, and the award-winning editor will take advantage of the wave of the new sign of the times: "The platforms are helping us to have more economic strength in many projects and to help new directors to undertake their formats. Any project is welcome. Cinema is everything; if you want, you can even do it on TikTok."
