Pepe Domínguez del Olmo, second Goya for best artistic direction for 'Modelo 77'
A detailed work of immersion in the Barcelona of the 70s and a new fruitful alliance with Alberto Rodríguez in 'Modelo 77' has given Pepe Domínguez del Olmo his second Goya.
Round between Barcelona and Seville, Dominguez del Olmo has been at the forefront of the artistic recreation of Barcelona at the end of the 70s, a turbulent period marked by the Spanish democratic transition which has brought important artistic challenges, as is usual in period films. Model 77, produced by Buena Vista International, Atypical Films y Movistar+, has been one of the big winners of the evening in the technical and artistic categories.
Dominguez, addressing his work in Model 77, considers that “historical accuracy” has been the key that has led “to excellence.” Everything starts, as he says, from an important work of knowledge of the period and documentation, which has been used to the extreme on the filming set: "We investigated to discover that what the prisoners ate were oranges. The entire prison was full of peelings, something that is very important. Even though they can't be seen, they were there, and for the actors to feel that is where the key to success is."
It is the second statuette that the art director wins from the hand of Alberto Rodríguez, with whom he already worked and triumphed with the award-winning The Minimum Island. Domínguez considers that this was the turning point of his career; when he really realized that “I was dedicated to this.” Since then, he has strengthened his team, with whom he shares the credit of Goya: “I love this job, I know I can do it well and, above all, I have a team behind me that does it very well, from whom I always learn and who I know can make me grow as they also make me grow.”
