Canon RF 5.2mm F2.8L DUAL FISHEYE

Canon makes its EOS VR system compatible with the “Apple Projected Media Profile” and with “spatial photo”, with the aim of expanding the 3D VR market and enhancing collaboration with Apple.

Its RF lenses for VR 3D video (the RF 5.2 mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye and the RF-S 3.9 mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye) will be compatible with the “Apple Projected Media Profile” (APMP), a QuickTime video profile that will be compatible with the spatial computer Apple Vision Pro developed by Apple. On the other hand, the RF-S 7.8 mm f/4 STM Dual lens (launched in November 2024) will be compatible with “spatial photo” and will help further expand the 3D VR market, as the collaboration with Apple progresses.

Canon launched the EOS VR system for virtual reality video recording in 2021 and has since covered the needs of VR video production in various sectors, including entertainment, tourism and education. In June 2024, the company introduced the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM DUAL lens, capable of recording 'space video', a type of 3D recording, which brings a sense of depth to Apple Vision Pro. Thanks to these developments, Canon has helped expand the possibilities of expression available for 3D VR.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), hosted by Apple on June 9, 2025, Apple announced the launch of visionOS 26, the new Operating System (OS) for Apple Vision Pro. Related to this announcement, two of the Canon RF lenses for VR 3D video, the RF 5.2 mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye and the RF-S 3.9 mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye, will offer native APMP playback, which will be compatible with visionOS 26, and whose availability is planned for the second half of 2025. Specifically, the recordings made with these two lenses and compatible cameras can be converted to APMP using the EOS VR Utility3 app, so it will be easier for users to enjoy a high-quality, immersive experience with Apple Vision Pro.

By updating the EOS VR Utility, the RF-S 7.8mm f/4 STM DUAL will be able to manage not only 'spatial video', but also 'spatial photography', which consists of a 3D image that will allow users to enjoy a sense of depth with a still image, when combined with the EOS R7 and EOS R50 V mirrorless camera models. Additionally, in mid-July 2025, the EOS R50 will also be compatible with the EOS VR system through a firmware update, so that it can capture 'space video' and 'space photography'.
