EITB - Iñárritu - Flesh and sand

The Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu chooses Plató 5 of EITB as the headquarters of his installation “Carne y Arena”, a proposal defined as an “immersive virtual reality journey” that can be seen in Bilbao until June 20.

Flesh and sand, created by Legendary Entertainment, Emerson Collective, Prada Foundation y PHI Studio began its tour at The Hangar in Aurora, Colorado, in October 2020. Since then, it has begun a world tour that has taken it to cities such as Montreal, Dallas, Omaha, Santiago de Compostela and San Francisco until now reaching set 5 of EITB.

EITB - Iñárritu - Flesh and sandThe work takes visitors to the center of a fragment of the journey of the migrants, often refugees, from Mexico and Central America. In this experience of approximately 15 minutes long, you can explore the vision of a conflict that crosses the American continent itself under the vision of the award-winning Mexican filmmaker, who seeks “break the dictatorship of the frame” via virtual reality.

The experience was presented in the room Multibox by representatives of the institutions that have supported the initiative: Amaia Arregi, mayor of Bilbao City Council; Teresa Laespada, deputy for Employment, Social Cohesion and Equality of Bizkaia, and Vanesa Fernández, director of Culture and Basque at EITB. Afterwards, the head of International at EITB Mikel Reparaz conducted a talk with Alejandro González Iñárritu himself.
