Christie pushes contrast to the limit via software with VDR

Christie VDR, a software-based performance feature aimed at CineLife+ projectors with RealLaser lighting, lands in CinemaCon 2026 (April 13-16, Las Vegas) to deliver significant operational benefits in both efficiency and image performance.

VDR, a function that can be activated through a software update, comes to provide a “new dimension” to the cinematographic experience through the laser power control between frames. In this way, the system achieves a screen contrast of up to 10.000:1 with a lens UHC, or of 5000:1 with a high brightness lens.

It is approach reveals, points Christie, new levels of detail in the dark areas and of texture in each scene without the need for additional hardware. Beyond the screen, VDR reduces laser power consumption by up to 30% and increases projector laser life by up to 50%, which “reduces the total cost of ownership for exhibitors.”
