The Corporation RTVE will deploy 17 mobile units, 170 cameras, five studios, more than 100 kilometers of cabling and a multi-screen infrastructure to produce and distribute the international signal of the visit of Pope Leo XIV to Madrid, Barcelona and the Canary Islands
RTVE faces one of the largest technical and operational deployments in recent years on the occasion of the official visit of Pope Leo XIV to Spain, which will take place between June 6 and 12. The Corporation will launch a large scale production infrastructure to cover the planned events, with the participation of 660 professionals and a complex network of resources destined for both the national production and the international distribution of the signal.
The device includes 17 mobile units, five production studios, a Car Camera, a helicopter, a tracking motorcycle, several drones and a total of 170 cameras deployed throughout the entire papal route. The infrastructure is completed with more than 100 kilometers of wiring and close to 70 special cameras intended to guarantee the capture of images in situations of high operational complexity, especially during the movements of the popemobile and mass events.
RTVE will also play a strategic role in the production of the institutional signal and in the customization of content for international media, a responsibility that places the Corporation as one of the main technical actors in the global coverage of the apostolic journey.
Ana María Bordas, Director of Content Production at RTVE, highlights that “RTVE will launch one of the most important deployments in recent years”, also underlining the coordination between the production centers of Madrid, Catalonia and the Canary Islands to guarantee an integrated operation.
Production distributed in three locations
The logistical complexity of the project is based on a distributed production architecturebetween three territorial centers. This structure will allow events of a very diverse nature to be managed simultaneously, from institutional events and liturgical celebrations to outdoor coverage with large concentrations of public.
David Picazo, director of TVE's News and Daily Programs area, has compared the magnitude of the operation to a "mini Olympic Games in three venues", highlighting that RTVE is responsible for both the national signal and international distribution. As he explained, the technical effort required to guarantee real-time coverage of all events is “major.”
Television production will include up to 13 informative specials broadcast simultaneously on La 1, Canal 24 Horas, RTVE Play and digital platforms, integrating signals from multiple locations and mobile resources.
One of the most relevant aspects of the deployment will be the use of specialized collection systems to offer dynamic perspectives and continuous coverage of the pontiff's travels.
In addition to the conventional cameras installed in the main stages, RTVE will use drones, a Car Camera specifically dedicated to monitoring processions, a support motorcycle for mobile capture and a helicopter that will provide aerial images of the routes and mass gatherings.
The visit to the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, the Cybele mass or the meetings planned in the Canary Islands are among the events with the greatest technical complexity, both due to the implementation requirements and the associated security and mobility conditions.
Multiplatform strategy and digital production
The operation is not limited to linear television. RTVE has designed a multiplatform distribution strategy that integrates television, radio, web, mobile applications and social networks.
