The digital dividend…for telecos!

After the setback of the imposition of the new rate to finance TVE, the Government intends to make peace with the telecom companies in exchange for giving them the disputed digital dividend.

teleco_edificioThe frequencies occupied today by analog televisions (790-862 Mghz), once the analog blackout occurs, will finally go into the hands of telecommunications operators. In this way, the Executive intends to compensate the telecos after the imposition of the controversial rate so that TVE can do without advertising.

This morning, during his appearance at the Industry Commission, Minister Miguel Sebastián confirmed that the digital dividend from January 2015 will be allocated to broadband mobility services. Sebastián has also assured that before the end of June he will present a draft Royal Decree that establishes the bases for this distribution of the spectrum. Industry considers that the incremental use value of the digital dividend would range between 12,000 and 16,000 million euros, 1.5% of GDP. His Ministry intends to give opportunities to telecom companies to increase competition in strategic services such as telephony and mobile broadband.
