Dedolight has a reputation for manufacturing small equipment with high lighting performance, highlighting the new 400 series in which its lighting performance has been increased exponentially. The renowned director of photography Tommie Ferreras has tested both the Dedolight DLH400S and its Dedoflex Octodome light box while filming an advertisement for Cuatro.

Grau Luminotecnia, distributor of Dedolight, has published in its blog an interesting document that has been written by the renowned director of photography in countless series, spots and film productions, Tommie Ferreras, with the tests carried out on the Dedolight DLH400S with its Dedoflex Octodome light box on the occasion of the recording of an advertisement for Cuatro.

Ferreras highlights that as a director of photography "atmosphere and space are parts of the same equation that must be resolved in harmony with time. This space and time bring us closer or further away from an idea depending on how we know how to manage and control with greater or lesser success the elements of any audiovisual project. One of these elements that I am referring to is the type of light source and its design to integrate into the project, such is the case of the Soft light DHL400S projector and the Dedoflex Octodome of the Dedolight company.

High performance

"The performance of the lamp is 400W, which, when overvolted, offers a power of 575W, which I took advantage of to place the different accessories such as the octodome and the honeycomb, which barely detracted from the power between 5 and 7 meters away from the subject. The octodome offered me an enveloping and balanced light like a light box in just 40 cm of depth, that is, you can imitate the light of a window in a tiny space. When I say imitate, I am saying that To achieve a quality of light similar to what the Soft Light offered me, I would need a greater distance and a larger light source and different accessories in front of it, this is sometimes not possible, due to time and space,” says Tommie Ferreras.

On the other hand, he admits that the honeycomb barely took away about a stop, highlighting the manageability of the ballast and the convenience of having a cable long enough to place the source several meters away.

Ferreras, in his analysis, emphasizes that "the lamp is interchangeable with a tungsten one if we wanted to use another quality of light within the same space. In my case I wanted to check the quality of light that it offered me using the DIA light lamp and using Rosco color corrector from the CTO 1/4 and 1/2 and CTS series, responding perfectly to the balance I was looking for in the shot. With the CTO 1/2 I remain a little more than half a Stop."

Likewise, the director of photography was struck by the weight of less than three kilos (without ballast), making it ideal both for television, especially TV movies and fiction in general, and even for cinema. Finally, Tommie Ferreas recognizes that the Softlight 400S "offer a very cosmetic light as can be seen and its use in color schemes and in advertising is really interesting as well as in small spaces."
