CNN switches from tape DV to JVC's ProHD

JVC announces that CNN has purchased a total of 177 ProHD GY-HM100 camcorders as the first step in the process of replacing the DV tape cameras now in use across its global operations. Throughout 2011 CNN will acquire new units. The GY-HM100, HD recording at 35 Mbps in MPEG-2 is compatible with the file-based XDCAM workflow used in CNN

JVC announced Thursday that CNN has purchased a total of 177 ProHD GY-HM100 camcorders as the first step in the process of replacing the tape-based DV cameras now in use across its global operations. Throughout 2011 CNN will acquire new units.

The GY-HM100 is a handheld 3-CCD camcorder capable of recording high definition at 35 Mbps in MPEG-2 format compatible with the file-based XDCAM workflow used in CNN. The files recorded at 1080i in MP4 format by this camcorder go directly to SDHC memory cards for quick ingestion into the chain's workflow.

Larry Librach, JVC's president of Broadcast and Public Sector, highlighted that "the GY-HM100 ProHD camcorder is well suited for a broadcaster who works with news at a fast pace. Its lightness, rugged solid-state recording, and high-quality image make it an ideal complement to CNN's traditional ENG shoulder equipment."
