South Africa's firm commitment to DVB-T2 versus ISDB-T
Following the recommendations of the South African Development Community (SADC), finally the Minister of Communications, Radhakrishna Padayachie, has assured in Midrand (South Africa) that his government is firmly committed to the analogue switch-off at the end of 2013, opting for DVB-T2.
As Panorama Audiovisual already announced on December 1, the South African Development Community (SADC) had decided to support the development of DVB-T2. Now, the South African government has made public its firm commitment to the European standard. The Minister of Communications, Radhakrishna Padayachie, has assured in Midrand (South Africa) that his government is committed to carrying out the analogue switch-off at the end of 2013, betting decisively on DVB-T2.
With this announcement, the number of countries that have adopted DVB-T2 now reaches 21, with many other countries in the trial phase.
Phil Laven, president of DVB, who has actively participated in the DVB promotion campaign against the tough Brazilian competition from the Japanese ISDB-T standard, has pointed out that "the announcement of South Africa's decision puts an end to the uncertainty about which digital standard this strategic country would finally adopt in the area. The measure will allow the country to carry out without delay a migration to digital technology. Sudáfrica optó finalmente por el DVB-T2 por su eficiencia, robustez y flexibilidad ya que la segunda generación de esta norma incrementa hasta en un 50% la eficiencia.
