Barely a year after its presentation, fifty companies are already supporting this new open video format developed by Google in collaboration with Mountain View.

The massive use of Internet video by users has motivated the technology industry to work on the development of applications that improve the viewing experience.

WebM is a free and open video format developed by Google in collaboration with Mountain View and aimed at use with HTML 5. It is a free software project, under a permissive license similar to the BSD license. It is composed of the VP8 video codec (originally developed by On2 Technologies) and the Vorbis audio codec inside a Matroska media container.1 2

It was announced within the framework of the Google I/O conference in May 2010 and has contributions and official support from Mozilla, Opera, Google, as well as another fifty publishers and software and hardware manufacturers in a combined effort to use VP8 as the standard multimedia format in the HTML 5 web language.
Microsoft also announced that its latest Internet Explorer 9 browser version will also be able to support WebM files if the VP8 codec is installed on the computer.

The codec can now be used in the YouTube HTML 5 version. In addition, Adobe has announced that its Flash Player software will receive an update to add support for the new format.

This new format can be applied with notable advantages on smartphones and tablets as an alternative to the FLV format, thus avoiding the installation of plugins in browsers that support HTML 5.

Due to its low latency, the new Web M is also emerging as an ideal format for telepresence or teletraining environments.
