DVB race against time in the Philippines
In a race against the Japanese-Brazilian ISDB-T standard, DVB steps on the accelerator in the Philippines to try to get the National Telecommunications Commission to finally opt for the European standard. The Philippines would, without a doubt, be a strategic country for both consortia.
In a race against the Japanese-Brazilian ISDB-T standard, a joint delegation of DVB and representatives of the European Union have met with the National Telecommunications Commission of the Philippines (NTC) to present the possibilities of the DVB-T2 standard emphasizing its technical and economic advantages. The NTC is expected to reconsider its June 30 deadline for its final decision on adopting a digital standard.
The delegation has requested a field test to demonstrate DVB-T2 against other competing standards.
Peter Siebert, CEO of DVB, said: "It has been shown that under similar conditions, DVB-T2 offers 100% more load capacity, reducing transmit power by 8-10 dB, resulting in a dramatic decrease in capital investment and operating costs of the transmitter network. Due to the considerable success of DVB-T2, low-cost STBs are now available for as little as $45 in UK retailers. In addition, There are low-cost DVB-T2 HD set-top boxes available on the market that operate on 6 MHz channels, as required in the Philippines.”
