Coinciding with a time when even the need to reduce channels to optimize the new digital dividend, SES proposes the satellite as an alternative and expects that in a couple of years the ultra high definition could begin to reach Spanish homes.

Ultra high definition is not a utopia, but a reality that, according to SES Astra, could reach Spanish homes in about two years. Today they already work intensely from televisions manufacturers (they expect a progressive decrease in the price of the screens similar to the high definition) to satellite TV operators or content suppliers (numerous films are already roll in 4K). The sector considers that ultra high definition will in turn promote 3D technology "self -celebrating" (without glasses) in the home.

This is one of the conclusions extracted from the intervention of Luis Sahún, general director of Ses Astra Ibérica in the traditional meeting of telecommunications and the information society organized by the IESE and that this year celebrates its XVIII edition. The SES director has intervened in the meeting within the emerging business models and employment creation panel, which representatives of Ericsson and Cisco Systems have also participated.

A field in which, in Ses, the satellite has and will have a lot to contribute. Sahún has argued that “today we clearly live the great moment of high definition. Bandwidth needs have increased before what is already a usual way of watching TV and not an exception of TV content ”.

The time in front of the TV increases worldwide, and the satellite is for the first time leader in the TV distribution in Europe (data from the latest monitor satellite). Additionally, there is a strong demand for various national band programs governments to provide connectivity in rural areas and universal mobile phone coverage. On the other hand, fixed and mobile telecommunications operators increase the use of the satellite to meet the demand of their video content users, both to complement their triple play offer, and to develop hybrid solutions with the satellite.

A connected and global world

"We head towards a multipant environment, in which any content is required, at any time, and anywhere," said Sahún. Except in some urban areas wired with optical fiber only hybrid solutions make it a sustainable model: the satellite provides sustainability to the TV connected and solves the problem of bandwidth, coverage and location of the users.

SES is developing, through industrial agreements in the sector, a complete “ecosystem” that allows hybrid solutions, and provides a satisfactory experience of “intelligent TV” without detriment of quality and prepared for new future technologies. A combination that mixes the best of the satellite with the best of the terrestrial IP distribution to improve the experience of TV consumption to the end user.

Finally, and in response to the question of one of the assistants related to the most social role of the satellite, Sahún has commented that SES works “actively with various non -profit organizations throughout the globe. The satellite helps the communications facilitate the actions in case of catastrophe or, for setting a more concrete example, a specialist doctor can guide a doctor in Tanzania from Madrid or Helsinki.
