The boom in the sale of stereoscopic televisions triggers the marketing of movies in 3D format
Movies like 'The Avengers', from Disney; or 'Prometheus', from Fox, register greater sales in 3D format.
According to a study by the DisplaySearch institute, the constant increase in the sale of 3D LCD televisions around the world is evident, registering a growth of 25.7% in sales in the fourth quarter of this year compared to the 14.2% registered in the same period last year.
The study also reveals that this progress has been constant throughout the year, with a growth of 15.2% in the first quarter, 21% in the second, and 23.5% in the third (always compared to the same period last year).
Although 3D is not, today, the most important factor for consumers when deciding to purchase, having a screen with 3D technology at home has boosted another sector in the United States: the marketing of movies.
In a study carried out by Nielsen it is clear that blockbuster titles in stereoscopic versions register higher sales in stores than 2D films.
20th Century Fox, for example, with the production Prometheus It sold 25% more in its 3D version than in the conventional version in its first week, as evident in the Nielsen VideoScan study.
For its part, Disney with the Avengers saw its sales grow by around 23% after the first week, and even older titles such as Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger recorded higher sales of 15% and 13% in relation to conventional Blu-rays.
Tom Adams, senior principal media analyst at Nielsen, has commented that "the penetration of televisions in the home has increased substantially and very rapidly. It is clear that if someone has a 3D television, they will demand stereoscopic content for their screen."
