The deal gives Netflix the rights to stream live-action and animated Disney films, including those from Pixar, Marvel and the recently acquired Lucasfilms.

Walt Disney has closed an agreement with Netflix for the transfer of exclusive television distribution rights for its films, becoming the first major studio to offer its films to viewers through Netflix instead of through HBO, Showtime or other premium channels in the United States.

The deal gives Netflix the rights to stream live-action and animated Disney films, including those from Pixar, Marvel and the recently acquired Lucasfilms. However, films from Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks studios are not included in the deal, because that studio distributes its films on television through CBS' Showtime. Disney recently signed a deal to distribute DreamWorks films theatrically after the studio's deal with Viacom's Paramount Pictures expired.

The agreement with Netflix will become effective in 2016, once the contract that Disney has with Liberty Media's Starz pay-TV channel concludes.

Netflix will be able to distribute Disney movies (except on DVD) once seven to nine months have passed after their release. Your Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the new Disney movies on television, tablets, PCs and mobile phones.

The agreement also includes productions from the classic Disney catalog available, in this case, from now on.
