After the success of the first tests carried out by Kyodo Television in Japan and the private demos on the occasion of NAB 2013, EVS has put to the test in an event of the magnitude of the Champions League semi-final the possibilities that its XT3-LSM system offers for live 4K replays.

On the occasion of the meeting between Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, TopVision configured its mobile unit to carry out 4K replay tests in parallel to its main HD broadcast. To do this, he used an F55 camera Sony together with the EVS XT3 server and the Corvid Ultra multi-format internal board interface from AJA, making it possible to zoom in on the image and slow motion replays at high resolution.

Thanks to the flexible configuration of EVS servers, the XT3 responded perfectly to the high bandwidth and storage capacity required in a 4K environment.

Luc Doneux, head of EVS' sports applications area, highlights that in this broadcast environment "servers have to be flexible, which is the basic principle in the “And, together with the fact that the

For the Munich match, the 4K XT3 solution was configured as a “one-in, one-out” system allowing continuous recording as well as random access replays of any 4K content on the server at the same time. However, EVS are working on a solution to deliver up to three 4K channels on a single XT3, with two recordings and one playback or one recording and two playbacks.

“Replays from alternative angles, slow motion and close-ups that capture all the details are now something that sports fans expect their television to offer and this will continue to be a fundamental requirement for 4K and beyond,” added Doneux.

EVS plans to carry out new 4K tests in the coming weeks coinciding with some of the most important sporting events.
