Sony launches its first professional SSD and HDD portable storage range

Designed specifically for professional file-based workflows, Sony's new offerings are capable of transferring content at up to 400 MB per second for SDD and 120 MB per second for HDD via USB 3.0.

Sony has announced its first SSD and HDD portable storage range. The PSZ-SA25 hard drive and the PSZ-HA50 and PSZ-HA1T drives will be available starting this September 2013.

Safely backing up material in the same location requires a device that is fast, rugged and efficient. As video file sizes become larger, material is backed up more frequently.

In response to these needs, Sony is now introducing a new range of portable storage devices. The drives are capable of transferring content at up to 400 MB per second for SDD and 120 MB per second for HDD via USB 3.0. At this speed, approximately 30 GB of content can be transferred in less than a minute and a half to the SDD hard drive via USB 3.0.

The units are compatible with a multitude of hardware, including Sony's PMW-50 and PMW-1000 recorders. Hours of footage can be safely stored with a choice of 256GB SSDs or 500GB or 1TB hard drives, all with USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 interfaces. Everything recorded during the day can be backed up in the evening, minimizing the risk of data loss.

Both SDD and HDD hard drives are designed for long-lasting professional use and allow program makers to download and back up content to the same location. With excellent shock resistance, they can absorb drops of up to 2.3 meters for SDD and up to 2 meters for HDD. They are also compatible with the MIL-STD-810G standard. The drives also support IP5X dust resistance and IPX4 splash resistance, so data can be backed up in a wide variety of environments and conditions*4. A sturdy case is also available for carrying gear during a shoot, protecting the unit from damage if dropped from heights of up to 8 feet.
