AMETIC awards its first Gold Medal to Pedro Mier Allende
Mier, de 94 años, fundó el grupo de empresas Mier e impulsó ANIEL, en 1973, primera patronal del sector y precedente de la actual AMETIC.
AMETIC ha concedido su primera Medalla de Oro a Pedro Mier Allende, cuya figura fue clave en la constitución de ANIEL (antecedente de la actual AMETIC), organización que presidió de 1983 a 1987.
The honoree received the distinction from Víctor Calvo-Sotelo, Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Information Society, during a dinner held at the Teatro del Liceo, coinciding with the Mobile WorldCongress being held these days in Barcelona.
The event, sponsored by Abertis Telecom, brought together a broad representation of the Catalan business community, especially from the ICT sector. Various authorities and personalities also joined in paying tribute to the veteran Catalan businessman of Asturian origin. Felip Puig i Godes, Minister of Business and Employment of the Generalitat, discussed the figure of the honoree, who he said is an example of entrepreneurship and a creator of wealth for everyone; Xavier Trias, mayor of Barcelona, for his part, who presented a diploma to Pedro Mier, highlighted the fact that this recognition was made coinciding with the Mobile WorldCongress, “at a time when the city is a world leader in telecommunications”; Tobías Martínez Gimeno, general director of Abertis Telecom, also had words of recognition for Pedro Mier and, as sponsor of the event, thanked the more than one hundred guests for attending.
The 94-year-old honoree, who was surrounded by a large part of his family, had an emotional speech of gratitude and regretted “not having been able to do more in the business world.” The guests rewarded him with a very warm ovation that lasted for several minutes. His son, Pedro Mier Albert, current president of Mier Comunicaciones, highlighted the decades-long work carried out by his father in the ICT sector "who has been a pioneer of the associative movement."
For José Manuel de Riva, president of AMETIC and host of the event, "the distinction granted to Pedro Mier represents recognition from the entire ICT industry to a businessman who, with his effort and dedication, has not only been the founder of a reference company with international projection but also with his vision of the future promoted, more than 40 years ago, the organization that was the precedent of what is today the multi-sector association that I have the honor of presiding over. For his sense of innovation, his desire to create wealth, and For defending the interests of the sector, Pedro Mier is an example of a businessman and a worthy creditor of this first “Gold Medal” awarded by AMETIC.”
Pedro Mier, a life linked to the electronics industry
Pedro Mier Allende was born in Trescares (Asturias) on July 23, 1919. Father of ten children and grandfather of 17 grandchildren, Mier is Asturian by birth and Catalan by adoption. In 1952, he founded Electro Mecánica Mier Allende in Barcelona, currently called Mier Comunicaciones and directed by his son Pedro Mier Albert.
A businessman since 1947, Pedro Mier Allende was one of the founders of ANIEL (the first employer association in the sector and predecessor of the current AMETIC), in March 1973, and a member of its Board of Directors from its foundation until 1987. In March 1983, he was elected president of ANIEL, a position he held until 1987. During his mandate, the PEIN (National Electronic and Information Technology Plan) was launched, the first strategic plan of the Ministry of Industry for the development of the sector in Spain and a great boost was given to the representativeness of ANIEL as the sector's interlocutor before the Public Administrations.
He was the creator and first president of Expotrónica, the Electronics Fair of the Fira de Barcelona. Member of the Board of Directors of the CEOE, advisor to the Development Institute of the Principality of Asturias and creator and first president of CEDEI, the first attempt to merge the business associations of the sector.
