HP now sets its sights on value-added IT services, in line with what other giants such as IBM did in previous years.

Hewlett Packard continues immersed in an internal restructuring process in order to consolidate its position in an increasingly complex market.

In addition to an aggressive layoff plan that has seen 34,000 professionals leave the company, plus another 15,000 expected before the end of the year, HP has now chosen to split into two companies: personal computers and printers (which will operate as HP Inc.) and technology services (Hewlett-Packard Enterprise).

The general decline in sales of desktops and laptops in favor of the take-off of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has made HP now set its sights on value-added IT services, in line with what other giants such as IBM did in previous years.

Meg Whitman will lead the new Enterprise division, while Dion Weisler will take charge of the personal computers and printers area.
Whitman has assured that "the decision to separate ourselves into two companies that lead markets underscores our commitment to a plan that turns the company 180 degrees. This operation will give each company the independence, financial resources, a clear objective and the flexibility they need to quickly adapt to market and customer dynamics."

The division of HP into two companies would also have the advantage of being able to divest itself of the personal computer area in case the market in this segment fails to rebound.

Currently, this division accounts for 51% of HP's income, compared to 49% from consulting, software and financial programs.
