A study of IHS-Consumer Electronics & Video Technology has shown that, considering the speed at which the public is becoming familiar with the new standard, Ultra High Definition will take off faster than High Definition once did.

In terms of content production, there are now more hours of UHDTV on the market than were available two years after the initial ratification of the HD format.

IHS also draws attention to the growing supply of equipment for 4K filming and production, as well as the emerging range of consumer electronics solutions.

While the transition from standard definition to High Definition took two decades to achieve a home penetration rate of 74% (Western homes), current progress in 4K Ultra HD is developing much more rapidly. IHS forecasts a penetration of 3% in 2016 and 15% in 2019.

On the contrary, the high demand for bandwidth required by UHDTV represents, in the opinion of IHS, an obstacle for pay broadcasters to adopt the new format. The IHS study reveals that video on demand and streaming providers could, in fact, be the best way to distribute 4K across the board, rather than waiting for pay television to catch up at the pace at which they are facing the adaptation of UHDTV.
