Netflix begins its activity in Spain with a low-cost offer
The online video club will offer three payment methods in Spain ranging from 7.99 euros to 11.99 euros per month depending on the resolution and number of connected devices.
It has been a long time coming but finally this October 20, the American content distribution platform Netflix begins its operations in Spain. For now, it will only be available for Vodafone customers and for those who access the Netflix website through connected televisions or STBs, smartphones, tablets, PCs or Apple TV and Chromecast devices.
From Netflix they assure that the agreement with Vodafone will not be exclusive so they are negotiating with other operators.
For now, Vodafone has confirmed that it will promotionally offer free access to Netflix for six months to Vodafone TV customers with fiber. The online video service will be integrated into the operator's STB.
This IPTV offer arrives in Spain with a much smaller catalog than what it is offering in the US market since it will test the demand of the Spanish consumer to increase its offer. At the moment, it has already closed agreements with broadcasters such as Antena 3 (it will offer its classic series such as El Internado or El barco) and some Spanish production companies.
Even so, it will offer a significant number of series and feature films that its users can enjoy in three payment methods: a basic service that offers DVD quality content that can be consumed on a single device for 7.99 euros per month; a standard plan that will offer two simultaneous connections in HD for 9.99 euros; and a premium plan through which the user will enjoy four simultaneous connections in 4K quality for 11.99 euros per month. Netflix will not have the option to rent premium titles since everything will be accessible to all its subscribers, thus delaying the arrival of first-run movies in this window.
The CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, who has come to Madrid to launch his company in the Spanish market, has admitted that he would be satisfied if they get “a third of households as customers within a period of seven years.” Regarding the existing offer in Spain such as Movistar Series or Yomvi (also in the hands of Movistar), Hasting commented that "in the US we have HBO as a competitor and both have grown."
Currently, the platform has 26 million households subscribed to its services around the world.
