Cablecam

One of the systems that is providing the most beautiful images to the broadcasts that Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) is carrying out at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was detached last Monday. This cablecam, a system based on cables suspended between two turrets with a route of 2.2 kilometers and developed by the Austrian company Camcat Systems, collapsed on the lower concourse that opens the way to Arena Carioca 1.
In its fall, the cablecam injured seven spectators who received immediate medical attention for injuries of various degrees (not serious).

CamCat System has collaborated with OBS since the Athens Games in 2004 and currently has more than 40 systems similar to the one now launched around the world. At the Rio Games, a similar Camcat system is being used in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas where the rowing events take place.

According to Agência Brasil, at the time of the accident strong winds of more than 50 km/h were blowing, which even broke a glass of the International Broadcasting Center (IBC).

OBS has opened a “thorough investigation” to determine the causes of the incident.
