The development potential of tape storage technology still has a long way to go thanks to the constant investment in research and development by IBM and of Fujifilm faced with the explosion of data to be stored.

The recent launch of the new LTO8 drive, with a storage capacity of 12TB and a transfer speed of 360 MB/s with the Full High version, represents a true revolution in the storage environment.

Tape storage technology is evolving in giant steps, achieving great achievements and high performance in record time as storage capacity has multiplied by 4.8 in just 6 years and two LTO generations (LTO6 at 2.5TB – LTO8 12TB). Between 2012 and 2018 the writing speed has doubled between that offered by the LTO6 generation (160MB/s) and the new LTO8 (360MB/s). In terms of data integrity, it is now a hundred times better in just three years.

Technological innovations

All of these extraordinary advances are the result of revolutionary technological innovations such as IBM's new TMR-Terzetto read/write head, as well as the 32-channel write head. The high performance of Barium Ferrite tape technology also has a lot to say in this evolution.

IBM's new LTO8 drive offers a native capacity of 12TB (30TB with 2.5:1 compression), a transfer speed of 360 MB/s (Full High) or 300 MB/s (Half High), exclusive read/write compatibility with LTO7 and LTO8 cartridges and a 1GB buffer.

Looking to the future, the roadmap of LTO technology is currently drawn up to the twelfth generation with launches planned between 2018 and 2030. After LTO8 with 12TB capacity, LTO9 and LTO10 technology will arrive with capacities close to 25TB and 48TB respectively, to give way to LTO11 and LTO12 technology with capacities around 96TB and 192TB.
